Traditional Origami Chicken

This Traditional Origami Chicken is not hard to make, but it has a few interesting steps. There are two inside reverse folds and two squash steps where the paper is flattened to form the chicken’s wings. There is also an interesting step which allows the crown of the chicken to be of a different color. In order for this to happen, you need to use paper (like origami paper) that is different color on the front vs back of the paper.

Traditional Origami Chicken Instructions

Step 1:

Start with a square sheet of paper with the color-side up. Position it so it is in “diamond” orientation (the square is balanced on one of its corners). Fold it in half (bottom to top).

Step 2:

Fold the left-corner and right-corner of the model to the top corner of the model.

Step 3:

Mountain fold (fold back) the paper so the right side is behind the left side.

Step 4:

Peel the top-flap towards the right – this will be the chicken’s wing. The angle doesn’t matter too much, but a good spot would be to make the bottom of the wing to be perpendicular to the body.

Step 5:

Easy open the paper at the green arrow and then press it down flat. Try to make a clean fold so there are no wrinkles or buckling (see next picture).

Turn the model over.

Step 6:

Repeat on this side: use the location of the back-wing to help position the top-wing.

Step 7:

Again, easy open the paper so it can be cleanly flattened.

Step 8:

Let’s work on the feet: fold the bottom section of the paper towards the right.

Unfold.

Step 9

Open the two layers of paper.

Refold the feet section so the paper is inside the two layers of the model. You will need to reverse one of the valley folds to a mountain fold (thus the name inside reverse fold).

Step 10

Let’s work on the head: fold the top of the model towards the right.

Unfold.

Step 11

Make an inside reverse fold. (Pry open paper, push the head through, close paper and sandwich the paper in between.

Step 12

Working with the head of the chicken, fold the front-flap of paper down.

Step 13

Pull up one layer of paper away from the head.

Step 14

Fold this layer of paper back so you see the color change. You may need to open the model a little; make the fold; and close the model again. This prevents the paper from ripping.

Traditional Origami Chicken is done!
