This origami puppet is often called a Snapping Fox Head because the ears are pointy; however, I think the model can represent almost any animal. It is a cool puppet type of origami model which allows you to make the mouth move up and down. This type of origami is often called “action origami” because for every action, there is a reaction. Instructions for the Snapping Fox Head
Step 1:
Start with a square sheet of paper. Fold the paper in half (left to right). Unfold. If you are using origami paper, place the white-side facing up. |
Step 2:
Fold the paper in half (top to bottom) |
Step 3:
Fold in the left and right edges of the paper towards the center. Unfold. |
Step 4:
With the right side of the model, fold the top-layer of paper towards the left. |
Step 5:
Press at the top-corner to squash the paper down flat. |
Step 6:
Repeat the squash fold on the left side of the model. |
Step 7:
Mountain fold (fold back) the left and right sides of the model. |
Step 8:
Fold up the bottom-left corner. |
Step 9:
Fold the left corner up one more time. Make the fold extend from one corner to the other as shown. |
Step 10:
Fold the entire section up. This flap will be the animal’s ear. |
Step 12:
Repeat steps 8 to 10 on this side of the model: Fold up the bottom-right corner. |
Step 13:
Fold the right corner up one more time. Make the fold extend from one corner to the other as shown. |
Step 14:
Fold the entire section up to complete the other ear. |
Step 15:
Rotate the model quarter turn clockwise so the ears are pointing up. |
Step 16:
Pry open the layers of paper. |
Step 17:
Ease the model open. |
Step 18:
Press in the other side of the model. This side will be the animal’s mouth. |
Step 19:
Bring the top and bottom parts of the model together to close the animal’s mouth. |
Insert your fingers into the model and make the mouth open and close. You can decorate the model with eyes and whiskers. |
