Petal Fold

A Petal Fold is a little more complicated than some of the other origami moves used on this web site. However, with practice, you should be able to understand how they are made. The first few you make probably won’t look perfect but with careful and exact folds, the results will get better and better.

The petal fold is so named because it is used in the making of origami flowers such as the Day Lily and the traditional Iris. But it can be used in other kinds of models such as in this Beating Heart.

Shown on the right is the crease lines to make the fold. shown below are the step by step instructions.

Instructions for Petal Fold

Step 1:

Valley fold the bottom edges towards the center of the model.


Step 2:

Unfold.


Step 3:

Lift the paper at the green dot.


Step 4:

Refold the creases made in step 1.


Step 5:

A new, small triangular flap will be generated. Fold the paper cleanly so the edges come to a sharp point.


Step 6:

This flap can be left point up, or it can be folded down.
