This Money 6-Pointed Star is a pretty clever design because it makes a 6-pointed star out of a 4-cornered piece of paper. It’s almost like magic, but it’s not a new idea. People who like math may know the trick to get an equilateral triangle from a rectangle or a square.
You can get many variations of the same star by changing whether you have the black-side or green-side of the dollar bill facing up; and by alternating whether you fold the bottom-left, top-left, bottom-right, or top-right corner in step 2 below.
One of the nice features of this dollar bill origami model is that it uses one sheet of paper, or in this case, one-dollar bill. You can also make a 4-pointed star with two-dollar bills or a 5-pointed star with five-dollar bills.
Money 6-Pointed Star
Step 1:
Start with a crisp dollar bill with the black-side facing up.
Step 2:
Fold up the bottom-left corner so the corner meets with the crease line made above (connect green dots).
Step 3:
Fold down the top-left side of the dollar bill so you get an equalateral triangle. Use the raw edge of the dollar bill as a guide and follow along the raw edge.
Step 4:
Continue making the triangle shape by folding up the left-side of the dollar bill.
Step 5:
Fold up the right-side of the dollar bill and tuck it under the layers of the triangle.
Rotate slightly so the triangle is sitting on its base.
Step 6a:
Fold and unfold the model from left to right. This identifies the midpoint along the edge of the triangle (blue dot)
Step 6b:
Repeat: fold the triangle in half starting from bottom-left.
Step 6c:
Repeat: fold the triangle in half starting from bottom-right. Note the location of the blue dots.
If you look at the model carefully, you will see the place where all 3 crease intersect (red dot). This is the center of the triangle.
Step 7a:
Fold down the top-point of the triangle so it meets the base of the triangle (connect blue dots).
Unfold.
Step 7b:
Repeat with the bottom-right corner of the triangle (fold and unfold to the blue dots).
Step 7c:
Repeat with the bottom-left corner of the triangle.
Turn the model over.
Step 8a:
Fold the top corner of the triangle so it meets the center of the triangle (connect blue dot with red dot).
Step 8b:
Repeat with the bottom two corners (connect blue dots with red dot).
Turn the model over.
Step 9a:
Refold the crease made in step 7a. Allow the back side to flip up so you see the point.
Step 9b:
Repeat with the bottom-right side of the model.
Step 9c:
Repeat one last time with the bottom-left side of the model.
Step 10:
Lock the layers together by tucking the flap of paper under the flap made in step 9a.
Turn the model over and your money 6-pointed star is done.
