This Egg Laying Chicken was thought to be a traditional model; however, it has been noted that this model was created by Zsuzsanna Kricskovics. It is similar to the traditional model called “Monkey Climbing a Mountain”. The chicken is not hard to make, but you will need a pair of scissors to cut off a piece that will become the egg.
This model is especially fun since it is an “action” model: this means that it can move. Other examples of action origami models include the flapping bird (flaps its wings), the jumping frog (leaps about), and the Balloon Bunny (can be inflated). In this case, the chicken can lay an egg.
You can use paper that is the same color on both sides or origami paper that is colored on the front and white on the backside. With origami paper, if you want your chicken to be predominantly white, then start with the colored-side facing up.
Egg-Laying Chicken Instructions
by Zsuzsanna Kricskovics
Step 1:
Start with a square sheet of paper. Fold and unfold the paper along the two diagonals to get an X-shaped crease. Turn the paper over. |
Step 2:
Fold the paper in half (left to right). Unfold. |
Step 3:
Fold the paper in half (bottom to top). |
Step 4:
Collapse the paper into a preliminary base. To do this, push the bottom-left and bottom-right corners towards one another. Allow the top-flap to come forward towards you. |
Keep going until the model closes up together. |
Step 5:
Bring the front flap towards the right. There is a similar flap behind the model; bring this one to the left so there are 2 flaps of paper on each side. |
Step 6:
Fold down the top layer of paper. |
Repeat behind. |
Step 7:
Like turning pages of a book, move the right flap of paper towards the left. At the back of the model, move one flap towards the right. |
Step 8:
Fold the top-left edge of the paper towards the center. Fold the top-right edge towards the center. |
Repeat behind. |
Step 9:
Like turning pages of a book, flip one flap from the right side of the model towards the left side of the model. At the back of the model, turn one page from left to right. |
Step 10:
The right side of the model will be the chicken’s tail. Fold the pointed section of the paper down and towards the right. |

|
|
Step 11:
Curl the tail. To do this, make a valley fold so the tailis hooked. |
|
|
Step 12:
Let’s work on the head of the chicken. First, fold the head towards the left. |
Step 13:
Fold the protruding tip towards the right. This forms the head. |
Step 14:
Fold the protruding tip back towards the left. This forms the beak. |
|
Step 15:
Fold up the bottom corner of the paper as shown. |
Step 16:
Tuck the corner of the paper behind the body of the chicken. |
|
Step 17:
Cut the bottom of the model, this will be the egg. The Egg-Laying Chicken is done. Now let’s see how it works. |
How to Make the Egg-Laying Chicken Lay an Egg
Step A:
Take the egg (which is actually a waterbomb base, turn it upside down and place it in the slot between the head and the tail of the chicken. |
This is the top view. Notice how the arms of the waterbomb base are outside of the chicken’s head and the tail. |
Step B:
Slide the egg down as far as possible. |
Step C:
Pinch the neck and tail of the chicken (red dots) and wiggle them up and down. |
As you jiggle the neck and tail, the egg will slowly drop down and fall out the bottom of the chicken.
|
For those who are familiar with origami, you will notice that the egg is actually a tiny waterbomb base. So, if you want, you can invert the waterbomb base and it will become a preliminary base. This means you can have an egg that is triangular shaped or square shaped. Both works! |
