This book sculpture has a very distinctive look which I call Tied Bundle because it looks like a bundle of hay tied together tightly so there is a cinched waist.
This design is a little more challenging compared to some of the other designs. The difficulty comes from figuring out the location of the landmarks at which the paper is folded. Once you figure it out, then the process is simple and repetitive. For some, it might even be simple and “meditative”.
Generally, book sculptures or altered books are books which have been transformed into incredible pieces of art. Altered books often include the use of scissors, glue, and sometimes paint; however, this design was made by folding only.
Book Sculpture: Tied Bundle
Step 1:
Take a book and remove the front and back cover but leave the pages bound together. Without ripping off the pages, remove small bits of binding glue that may still be adhering to the spine of the book. The book used here was a day-planner donated by Slingshot. |

Step 2:
Fold down the top-corner of the page so it touches the spine of the book (connect the red dots). Move the point of contact up and down a little until the crease bisects the bottom-corner of the page (green arrow). Once you’ve found that, press down to establish the crease. |

Step 3:
Turn the page. |

Step 4:
Now do the same thing but fold the bottom corner towards the spine. Adjust the location until the crease bisects the top-right corner. Press down to establish the crease. |

Step 5:
Turn the page. |

Step 6:
Repeat steps 2 through 5 until all the pages have been folded. |
