Shown are two units of Carmen Sprung’s Star Calendar (step 12). To assemble the units, you must pair the months so they add up to 13. For example, January (=1) is paired with December (=12). Shown is February (=2) and November (=11).

Flip the right unit (red) back to front and tilt the units slightly so they are leaning towards one another.

Slide the white unit under the small flap of the red unit. Hook the small-flap of the white unit behind the red unit.

This is an example of a pair of units described by Carmen Sprung in her original instructions.

Once you have paired all the units, it is time to assemble the pairs. Shown above are 2 pairs of units: January on the left and February on the right.

Mountain fold the “2013” section of the right pair.

Rotate the right unit 90 degrees (quarter turn clockwise).

Insert the “February” tip under the numbers of the left panel. Wiggle the right unit until it fits nicely.

Take the right-panel of the right-unit and bring it behind. This allows a panel from the “January” unit to come forward (it is also red).

Valley fold the small tab up and tuck it under the “February” section of paper (there should already be a crease here). This move secures the units and you are pretty much done.

Turn the model over and tuck the small “2013” flap into the corresponding pocket. Four units are combined. Bring in another pair of units and add it onto the assembled part.

Assemble the remaining pairs in the same way. Occasionally, turn the model over and tuck in any tabs of paper which might be hanging around. When done correctly, front and back will have a checkered pattern. As often with modular origami, assembling the last unit is the most challenging so be patient.
