This origami dollar bill money ring has been around since the 1960’s. Not quite old enough to be call a “traditional” design; however, it has been around long enough such that no one remembers who first created it.
The creator of this ring must have been very clever because the design is elegant in its simplicity. “Simple” means that there are no elaborate, acrobatic folds; however, this model is not “easy” because the dollar bill is thick making it difficult to fold and tuck where necessary.
Let’s give this “classic” design a try!
Instructions for Money Ring
Step 1:
Start with a crisp dollar bill with the black-side facing up.
Step 2:
Fold the dollar bill in half lengthwise (top to bottom).
Step 3:
Fold in half again (top to bottom).
Turn the model over. The word ONE should be visible at the ends of the dollar bill.
Step 4:
Mountain fold (fold back) the small white section of the dollar bill.
Step 5:
Mountain fold again at the right-side of the letter E of the word ONE.
This is how it will look like. The word ONE should be visible in a small square of paper.
Step 6:
Fold the dollar bill at a 45 degree angle. The location depends a little on the size of your finger. A good location is to make the fold so the top-edge of the crease is in between the two LL in DOLLAR.
Step 7:
Roll the dollar bill towards the left so it forms a loop.
Keep rolling.
This is a completed loop. Roll a bit more until the stem is towards the front of the model and facing you.
Step 8:
Fold up the “stem” of the dollar bill so it is in front of the loop.
Step 9:
Fold down the “stem” of the dollar bill so it wraps around the loop and comes out the bottom of the loop.
Step 10:
Fold the right side of the model over to the left. The little square which says ONE should be visible. Tuck the border (white area) under the layer of paper made by the stem.
Step 11:
Fold up the stem of the dollar bill and tuck it under the square which says ONE.
You’re done!
The left ring shows how it looks like if you start with the black-side of the dollar bill facing up. If you start with the green-side of the dollar bill facing up, the final ring will have a slightly different look as shown on the right photo. This version is a little harder to center the “1” exactly in the middle of the square of paper.
