3D Origami Egg

3D Origami Egg
Like the 3D Swan, this 3D origami egg is made with small triangular pieces made from the process known as Chinese Paper Folding or Golden Venture Folding. This DIY paper egg uses about 200 units so start folding!

If you have never made a 3D origami model yet, start by learning how to make the individual units. Once you’ve made a pile of the triangular units, come back here and learn how to assemble them into an egg.

Row 2:

Use 4 more triangular units to connect the 4 pieces from row-1. Do this by sliding the tabs (from row-1-units) into the pockets (of row-2-units).

Row 3:

For row-3, we want 8 units so we need to increase the number of units by adding loose units at row-2. To do this, place a triangular unit between each row-2 unit. Connect the loose unit with new row-3-units.

Row 4:

Add 8 units the regular way to make row-4. Make sure to insert the arms of different units into the new row-4-unit. Staggering the units will make the egg more stable.

Row 5:

For row-5, we want 16 units. This means you need to add 8 loose units in between the units in row-4.

Row 6 to Row 14+:

Continue adding 16 units per row. Usually 8 to 12 more rows would do the trick.

The shape will naturally start to curve inwards. You can stop adding rows when the shape is like that of an egg.

Row 15:

Once you have enough rows, decrease the number of units per row. You can insert 2 tabs into a single pocket or just use fewer and fewer units per row.

You are done when the hole at the top of the egg is closed. Hold the egg in the palms of your hands and gently squeeze the top of the egg to mold it into an egg shape.
